Chapter Thirteen
Shelly’s hand rested on Claire’s thigh as Claire drove. Shelly had quickly typed her address into Claire’s GPS when Claire started the car, but otherwise she’d been quiet, and still. Except for the hand she had resting on Claire’s thigh, which soothed and massaged intermittently. Claire glanced over at Shelly in her passenger seat, her eyes closed, her head back against the headrest. She wondered what Shelly was thinking. Really, she wondered what she was doing herself.
Claire had had every intention of seeing Shelly tonight and letting her know they couldn’t be together. That she was far too worried about the consequences this would have on her career to be able to commit herself fully. But things hadn’t worked out that way. She had been warring with herself for over a week, trying to figure out what to do. She could convince herself that she wasn’t attracted to Shelly when they were apart, but the moment they were together, her brain stopped working. It was absolutely undeniable. She was attracted to Shelly with every cell in her body, and the minute they were near each other, nothing else really seemed to matter.
She turned her car onto a quiet street with perfectly manicured lawns and long sweeping driveways. The homes were spaced far enough apart for privacy but near enough to each other to remind her that they were still in close proximity to Boston proper. Shelly shifted next to her as they approached the GPS destination; it had only taken about fifteen minutes to get here. Long enough for Claire to get lost in her own thoughts, not that she thought of much else other than the way Shelly’s hand felt on her leg.
“Pull up to the garage—we can go in through the front.” Shelly’s voice was soft; she sounded vulnerable. Claire had never seen her so exposed as she had at the gym. There was something almost desperate in the way Shelly told Claire that she needed her. It sparked something in her, a desire to protect her, to ease her, to take care of her. It made her realize that she wanted Shelly to need her. She wanted to be the one Shelly reached for. And since that realization, she had not released contact with Shelly for any significant period of time. It felt right.
Claire pulled up to the garage and turned off the car. Shelly’s home was gorgeous, red brick with white shutters and polished black accents. A two-car garage was attached to the two-story home, its front as immaculately maintained as the house. The walkway to the front door was lined with blossoming flowers and shrubs, carefully shaped and cared for. Solar LED lights framed the path as they got to the front steps, flickering as the sun started to set on the day.
Shelly released Claire’s hand long enough to adjust the bag on her shoulder and open the front door. She discarded the bag and her sneakers at the entrance, holding her hand out for Claire’s as she waited for Claire to follow her.
